There are many simple lifestyle changes you can make to control acid reflux:

Raise the head of your bed at least six inches. If possible, place blocks of wood under the legs at the head of the bed. Alternatively, use a wedge of solid foam under the head of the mattress.

Avoid foods that cause the valve between the stomach and esophagus to relax during digestion, such as coffee, chocolate, fatty foods, peppermint and spearmint.

Limit acidic foods, which can worsen irritation during reflux. These include citrus fruits and tomatoes.

Acid reflux, often referred to as "heartburn," can be prevented by making some lifestyle changes, such as lowering your overall body weight, dressing up and taking off clothes during the day and at bedtime, quitting smoking, drinking tea or coffee on an empty stomach, and stopping drinking alcohol as it can lead to binge drinking.
